Busy month for this team!

Protospiel number 2 is 2 weeks away!! Gavin, Jeff, and I are rolling out for a weekend of playtesting revolutionary prototypes and soaking up the creative atmo~

Best part? There are still tickets available!! Protospiel Indy is being held at the Kappa Delta Pi Headquarters on the north side of Indianapolis (withing spitting distance of the Pyramids) and is open to any and all game lovers. I mean any. And all. Hardcore strategy games next to single player war games next to musically inclined party games. Sign up as a designer to test your own, or come as a playtester and discover the many ways ideas become games.

But this is only where our summer starts!

We are also ramping up for Indy Pop Con and Origins in June, Gen Con in August, and oh yeah, KICKSTARTING MAKE-A-MOLECULE (formerly Covalent) !!!

New Year, New Game Resolution

Hello 2019!?!

We have big hopes for this year, and to give hope strength, these are our RESOLUTIONS!!

  • We will exhibit at least 6 conventions/events.
  • We will launch a Kickstarter for “Make-a-Molecule.”
  • We will increase our social media presence.
  • We will finish with playtesting for MECH.
  • We will take all feedback, positive and negative, but not change rules or mechanics until after we have a chance to test it ourselves.
  • We will be confident in our games.

In other news, we are doing things this month! We will be participating in the Indie Showcase at Ohayocon in Columbus, Ohio. Three very long days of hanging out with eager congoers that we just know are ready to learn about chemistry… or at least play a cool game about chemistry… and fellow game dsigners (video and tabletop!)

At the same time, we snagged a gig at a local public library, Bexley Library, talking to youths about how we got started designing games and how to go about designing your own. A program we will also be running at the Mooresville Public Library next month!

Next week is going to be cray. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

(/ˈpeɪtriɒn/) n. (1) One of the lesser known Transformers (2) a membership platform that provides business tools for creators to run a subscription content service as well as ways for artists to build relationships and provide exclusive experiences to their subscribers, or “patrons. (3) hope?

We are a few months away from launching our first Kickstarter, like REALLY. The game is good, people like it, we have identified a market, and contacted manufacturers. But money… (You know, that thing you use to buy games, gas, and groceries (AKA the three G’s of life)) well, we need it.

We need to go to more events, conventions, and hold demos. We need to buy prototypes, business cards, and other promotional material. We are doing all we can, but we are just five minimum wage earning twenty-somethings and “doing all we can” is about $250 a month.

The way we look at it, we have two options: 1) Slow Down, or 2) ask for help.

So, can you help?

And, yeah, of course there will be kickbacks! If you subscribe our Game Master subscription level for $10 or more a month, you will get more frequent updates, vote on card and piece design, and be in actual communication with us via Discord. You may also get some Print n’ Plays chucked your way as we work through our designs. Naturally, there is also the Gamer subscription for as little as $1 a month!

Check out our Patreon page:

If chucking money at us isn’t your thing; like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and friend us on Instagram. Help us break our shell and get out there!

Any support we receive helps fill the motivation bucket.

Protospiel- a convention like no other

Wow! I just had the best and most uplifting weekend ever.

Gavin and I (Hanna) attended our first Protospiel, Protospiel Chicago!

another low quality meme

Valid question!

Started in 2001 by game designers Stephen Glenn, Dominic Crapuchettes, and Mike Petty, Protospiel is an annual get-together of amateur and established game designers to test and promote nearly-finished game prototypes.

The atmosphere is casual, yet everyone is serious about their goals and dreams of publishing games.” From the Protospiel website.

To us it was a chance to get professional help and opinions on our games while getting experience participating in playtests of games in various stages of development. Seeing how other designers tackle the same problems we are facing with our games was really valuable.

(We also got to play some really awesome games!!)

Gavin was able to make some updates to Galtrax: Galactic Conquest’s technology trees. They are still just as hard to achieve, but without the double whammy of the high price tag. As well as test out one of his proposed layouts.

I managed to keep Covalent’s game time to 15 minutes on three playtests! Mission accomplished! But now it is a question of scoring and balancing the weight of the cards in regards to victory… but hey, game play works!

Huge shout out and thanks to all of the people who played our games and to the games we got to play!

Games like: ArchRavelry, which will be kickstarting soon!!

We have great news! Beyond Board Games is going to be back at Gen Con this year in the First Exposure Playtest Hall where we will be playtesting MECH!

MECH is a modular, hex-based, battle tactics MECH game in which you plan tactically, utilize logistic cards, and requisition gear for your MECH to defeat your competition.

The State of Play

So, here is where we stand…

Beyond Board Games is officially a Business!! We have a retail licence and everything! Which means that come 2019 you might actually be able to purchase some of our games from places other than The Game Crafter.

We have narrowed our focus a bit and have stopped trying to do fifteen things at once. I know, who does that? You can expect to hear more about MECH as we finish up playtesting, soon we will moving on to finalizing art themes!

We have a new game that is moving closer to production that not many of you have heard about. Covalent is the love child of Make-A-Molecule and actual science, as many of the same themes are present in both Make-A-Molecule and Covalent, Covalent has a more refined focus on molecules that are formed through covalent bonding. #RealScience

You also may have noticed a bit of a change in our URL, that’s right,

We will be playtesting Castle Quest this fall, and will showing it off at Indy Pop Con in the vendor hall and Gen Con in the First Exposure Playtest Hall.

We are looking at adding more conventions for this fall and will let y’all know when we have more info.

See you soon!
